-The elusive and reclusive grand master of Pick Up

In my teenage years I made the discovery that I was unattractive to all who came across me. But in particular and with chagrin to the very core of my being I realised that girls were not interested. It seemed a cruel joke played upon me by nature the gods fate and lady luck that that which I most desired was the one thing that I could not attain. That cliche I was surfing the web when somehow I stumbled upon a very basic html web site obviously the author was not interested in the appearance of the site because it was way basic. However what was really interesting was the content. It was all about and completely devoted to how to pick up and have sex with hot chicks. It was a scientific community devoted to the art of Pick Up (PU) and the members of the community were known as Pick Up Artists (PUA). The dynamic force behind this ‘movement’ was a guy named Maniac High (Not his real name). Maniac was quite a guy. What was his real name? No one knows. No one ever saw Maniac High except for a Japanese PUA named Taro San. But he too has dropped off the radar. In fact it seems all the original practitioners of this seductive art have gone to ground.

However a bastard child has sprung from this promising group of pioneering innovators. A Guy who calls himself ‘Mystery’ is a kind of perversion of the PUA. He has his own television show – a thouroughly b grade affair. There was a PUA of some repute who advanced the art a few increments back in the day, however I very much doubt the current televised ursurper is the original Mystery. Id say the new guy is some kind of highjacking leech capitalising on a valid theme for his own gain.

On a lighter note I saw on youtube recently, a young man very much the PUA going around Camden in London with his mate holding a camcorder – to film the sessions – and basically going around and practising/demonstrating PU techniques.

So rewind back to around 2001. Maniac High writes on his website something like:

“Maniac high’s Pick up Girls Guide.” Who are you and what is this website: I am an American Living in Japan and I like to pick up chicks.”

And this is exactly what Maniac High did. He made a practice of going out to Shibua to the night clubs and attempting to make his progress all the way from initial contact the 3 second rule, nutralising bitch shields and the ug friend, through to having sex with the chick.

Maniac High would then record the nights events in chronological order. The various aspects would be discussed as though it were a assignment. Because a great deal of concepts had to be refered to and to avoid writing laborious paragraphs of redundant detail, Maniac High – and I strongly believe Maniac High was the creator – created or invented – innovated – developed a whole bunch of phrases and descriptic terminology, acronyms and idiom specifically as a result of the development of the art of PU. PU, PUA, Cockblock, Neg-Hit, Bitch-Shield, HB, Wingman Chick-BS are just some of the many abbreviations and words invented by Maniac High. Just as African American lower class nighbourhoods unabashedly developed “babydaddy” “Babymomma” and “driving Dirty” to describe specific things, Maniac High came up with a whole swag of new industry jargon for PUAs.

Maniac not only described all events, but also applied lucid analysis and conclusions to the data. He began to formulate structures and strategies. In strategy and tactics the man had an original thinking genius for PU. He was a true PUA. For example Maniac High would describe a situation where he failed and then proceed to draw the correct conclusion from the failure and then enthusiastically yet calculatingly, intelligently go out the next night and apply the remedy to the previous night’s mistake. He got through, he moved forward and succeeded. Maniac High developed so many groundbraking techniques and basic obswrvations were crystalised and what one feels was put into words in a truly groundbraking way. What ever happened to this genius?

For example maniac would describe the application of a neg-hit. A negative hit is a comment designed to ultimately put a really hot 10/10 chick at ease while showing that you are smart. He knew that Hot Babes (HB) are always expecting guys to hit on them and for this reason they have what he called a bitch shield: They are not bitches – they are actually very sweet but HBs require a outward public bitchiness to avoid being slobbered on by every man and his dog. Its the way the world works and Maniac High well observed it. He reasoned that as a PUA with the aim of initially talking to a girls hed just encountered for the first time, he needed a way to break through the firewall, the dissmissing attitude he called the bitch-shield. Maniac High thus developed the Neg-Hit. In essence it goes something like this:

“Those are nice nails! Are they real?”

This comment directed to the HB does two things. Firstly it compliments her. Chicks like compliments. But at the same time it kind of a criticism. “Are they real?” This causes just a tiny little bit of self doubt in th HB. She is wondering if she looks the way she wants to. This makes you the PUA interesting and intriguing to her because your not like the others…You seem polite interested, but at the same time not interested. Very Zen. Maniac high developed this.

Maniac High reasoned that on a scale sliding to ten HBs have stronger Bitch-Shields as their rating increases. Usually there is no need to employ bitch shield nutralising Neg-Hits if you deem the chick a 6 or less. They already have a low or normal self esteem and dont need any quasi insults as they have very minimal Bitch-Shields.

However he said, if a HB10 comes along you must employ a stronger neg-hit. This can be something like:

“Oh your a model? Oh like a hand model? Oh you have beautiful hands!”

This is fairly insulting, however it is just what the doctor ordered when speaking to a HB10 for the first time. She can’t help but feel you have somehow missed her beauty. Are you blind? She may then attempt to interact with you more than had you walked up and said “hi im john smith your beautiful.”

Infact Maniac High came up with a word to describe you and me. He called us Average Frustrated Chumps (AFC). The AFC is always following his instinct and always getting nowhere fast. Maniac described how he was once an AFC. He would buy expensive dinners and gifts, date the one girl and this would result in him getting no sex. So he devised the pick up girls guide.

The Fallout

Maniac High made apoint to describe every new conquest and there were steady numbers through the revolving door. This leads one to speculate. I often wondered what happened to Maniac High. He stopped posting and that was that. The website stayed up for a few years then just dissapeared. It had a huge popular following and no attempts at commercialisation. Maniac was not interested in money. He simply wanted to advance the art. His dedication and fanaticism permeated the web page like thick smoke in still air. The man was a visionary. So then it is baffeling that Maniac High just dissapeared. Why? One theory is that possibly he contracted a serious disease such as HIV or Hepatitis C. I mean the man was not monogomous. Maniac must have bedded 50 Hot Babes in one year! And was not focused on quantity but hotness. Still living in the fast lane has to put bags under the eyes and Maniac lived a sexually hedonistic lifestyle. All in the name of science of course. But it begs the question. Did Maniac get a disease that forced a major life reassessment? The other contender is that he died in a car accident or from a sudden cancer. Either way whatever the real situation, Maniac High just dissapeared, as in witness protection programme dissapeared! Where did he go? To the disciples of the PUA community its as though Einstien did E=MC2 and then physically vanished into the ether.

Health issues aside, the one critisicm I will make of Maniac High is that he never addressed race in his analysis and discussion of pick up, nor did he weigh the relative value of attractiveness physical and IQ.
