Personal Castle

personal castle

The original idea was for a cheap simple semi-self-built personal castle The overarching conceptual context being that the world has become rediculously expensive beyond all justification. I dont want to pay 150000$ for the house alone and another 200000$ for the land! All I want is a simple honest beautiful roof over my head. Sure the land costs cannot be helped in this day and age, but certainly you can build a cheap and good personal castle and it wont cost you 150000$, it will cost you only 18000$. The classic materials and construction as well as the small dimensions keep the costs down to 7000$ for the basic building the larger 10m by 10m picture you see above estimate cost is 18000$.

The quick description of this accomodation is as follows: A reinforced concrete slab as foundation a ground floor 10m by 10m and 5m tall, constructed of "reconstituted sandstone" blocks each is 60cm long and 25cm width and 25cm height. They each weigh 60kg. In the corners of the groundfloor reside four giant timber columns each of 10m height and reaching up past the ground floor up to the ceiling of the first floor for the purpose of main structural support for the roof and the first floor walls.

The first floor is reached by a typical staircase and the walls are heavy glass sliding doors. Each first floor wall can be slid open so that 50% of that wall is open air. There is a balcony. The roof is a pyramid of corrugated iron.

There are many benefits to this design the first being aesthetics the second sturdiness and the third cost. It is beautiful it is strong it will last and it is cheap. Visually, the sand coloured slabs the plate glass and the exposed timber columns make for an attractive combination. The high placed ground floor windows and the stone walls in which the windows are set, present a cosy secure protective building, reminicent of a castle. The juxtaposed first floor windows are seemingly delicate in contrast and provide both an excellent viewing platform to admire the view and a view in its own right from the external byestanders perspective. The ground floor is largly redundan it is a general use space, while the first floor boasts a open plan kitchen a centrally placed wood fire heater, and a radiating copper chimney rising through to the roof. A lounge space for a couch and television and another corner space for a dinner table. In the fourth quadrant of this forst floor is a potentially partitioned bedroom space and study computer space. Views or privacy are alternately possible with the heavy glass sliding doors shut and elegant vertical blinds shut in place.

Once the slab reinforced concrete slab and its basic plumbing are laid and set, provided all the sandstone blocks and the four timber columns are available as well as the roof materials, then the building can be erected quickly - in the time frame of two weeks. You can do it yourself if your good.
